I'm not one of those "all fly rod, all the time" guys and so I appreciate a good conventional rod, whether for bass fishing at the lake or chasing trout down in the bay. I'm a big fan of the MHX blanks from Mudhole Tackle for an unbeatable combination of performance and price. My own preference is for casting rods with a split grip and Pac-Bay Minima reel seat, with spiraled guides. It's a super light combo that performs well with both monofilament and braid, and MHX blanks are available in a staggering variety of lengths, flexes, and weights. Use a spinning reel? I like to build spinning rods with Microwave guides from American Tackle for extraordinary casting distance and minimal line twist.
